What should I do?

If you suspect that a test result is false, or if you would like to check the accuracy of your meter, you have the following options:

  • Repeat the measurement with a new test strip.
  • Check your meter using the control solution (glucose solution) that is provided specifically for your meter.
  • Make a comparison test in the presence of your doctor by comparing your test result with the laboratory value. Make sure that the blood used for this comparison test is taken from the same puncture site. Ideally, the blood used for measurement with your system and the parallel measurement in the laboratory should come from the same blood sample

Please do not compare different meters for blood sugar monitoring with each other. This does not reveal anything about the accuracy of an individual meter, since the systems may use different technologies.

The following factors can lead to false test results, and you should make sure that you avoid them:

Incorrect handling

  • A frequent source of errors is not placing enough blood on the test strip. So make sure you follow the instructions for your meter when you place the blood on the test strip.
  • If too little blood comes out of the puncture site, please do not squeeze it, as this causes tissue fluid to emerge too, which dilutes the blood and distorts the test result. It is better to wait a moment after pricking the skin, and, if necessary, to massage the finger gently towards the puncture site. Change the lancet at regular intervals. Obviously meters that only need a very small volume of blood are more practical.
  • The test strips may become damp. Please remove them from the packaging (vial or foil wrapping) immediately before using them.
  • Close the vial at once, and never store the test strips in the bathroom.
  • If your meter requires a code, then please make sure that the code number on the packaging or the vial corresponds to the number shown on the meter.

Other factors

  • Test results from some meters can be affected if you are taking medication (e.g. Marcumar®, Aspirin®, vitamin C).
  • Consult your doctor about any unclear blood sugar values or any medication you are taking, or request information directly from the manufacturer of your meter.
  • If the ambient temperature is too low or too high for your meter, then you cannot rely on the results. So please keep within the temperature range stated in the operating instructions for your meter.
  • This is also true of the oxygen dependency of your meter. Please note the maximum permitted altitude above sea level stated in the operating instructions. You cannot rely on the results obtained above this altitude. This can also be a problem when flying.
