Living with type 1 diabetes can be challenging, particularly when it’s combined with a career and being a mother of two kids. Since my diagnosis at the age of three, the rigmaroles of blood glucose management and carbohydrate counting have nearly always been a part of my life. Over the years, I have navigated through these complexities with help from a variety of diabetes management techniques. From having type 1 diabetes in the era of insulin derived from pigs, it has been fantastic to witness these methods evolve and experience their effects, first-hand, on my quality of life.

Transition to my first ever insulin pump

For a number of years, I managed my blood sugar levels with syringes and pens – nearly every part of my day was devoted to calculating carbohydrates and making sure my blood sugar was in range. However, when I fell pregnant, the fluctuating hormone levels that accompanied the growth of a new baby, as well as the need for more insulin and tighter control, added a whole new layer to my diabetes management. And so, following a recommendation from my endocrinologist, I transitioned on to my first ever insulin pump – something which, at the time, felt a little foreign after my well-rehearsed routine of self-injecting.

Going on an insulin pump felt like a massive weight was taken off my shoulders – it made life so much easier and meant that I wasn’t always thinking about my diabetes. Being on a pump means you hardly have to think about blood glucose levels during the day. This was a tremendous benefit for me as a working mum with a busy lifestyle.

Choosing the mylife YpsoPump

Then along came the mylife YpsoPump, a new insulin pump system for Australian patients. It was recommended to me by my diabetic educator and I was keen to give it a go because it seemed to tick all my boxes.

Since going on the mylife YpsoPump, I’ve not looked back. The main aspects that I love about it are:

  1. It has a simple and easy-to-use touchscreen that takes the hassle out of blood glucose management.
  2. Its small size means that I can simply tuck it away without feeling self-conscious about it – I almost forget it’s there.
  3. It has these great little glass reservoirs, which can be preloaded, so I don’t have to take everything with me when I go out.

I have found the support from Ypsomed to be very good. They came all the way to Perth to train me and now continuously check in on me, offering all the support and guidance I could possibly ask for. I happen to have slightly lower than average requirements for insulin and the team at Ypsomed have been fantastic in supplying cannulas without the infusion sets, reducing the possibility of wastage.

Flexibility and spontaneity thanks to my insulin pump

The mylife YpsoPump has given me great confidence in managing my type 1 diabetes and I always know where I am with my sugar levels. It has given me peace of mind and allowed me to prioritise the things in life that are most important. Working today? No worries, the mylife YpsoPump can help. Spending time with the kids? The mylife YpsoPump has me covered! Ultimately, it has given me flexibility to be spontaneous and not be locked down to a routine.

If you’re considering the mylife YpsoPump, my advice would be to research your options thoroughly. The mylife YpsoPump has suited my lifestyle perfectly but it is important that you choose what is right for you. I hope that all people with type 1 diabetes understand that, even though life can be challenging, you can achieve almost anything with a healthy lifestyle, the right attitude, and your pump by your side.
